Editorial policy

The Gauge and Grain publishes one kind of page: an entry that answers a single question about a beer festival, the beer poured there or the journey to it. Everything on the site is written for this ledger and checked against sources a reader can obtain.

Sources

An entry names the documents it read: published timetables, festival documents that are made public, safety and responsible-service literature, brewing references and public statistics. A source is named so that a reader can find it, not to borrow its authority. Where two sources disagree, the entry says so and names both.

Verification and dates

Each entry carries the date it was last checked. A timetable, a festival date or a rule that has changed since that date can make an entry out of date, and a reader who finds that is asked to send the document. Corrections are made in the entry itself, with a new checking date, never in a separate note.

Beer, judging and money

A price appears only when a named source has published it, and it is written with the date of that source.

Alcohol and responsibility

Every entry about a tasting day treats moderation, water, food and a safe way home as part of the subject. The ledger does not encourage heavy drinking, does not describe drinking games and does not present a high strength as an achievement. Entries about service describe refusal, age checks and the training that festivals and venues publish.

The address and its history

The address carrying this ledger was registered and left unused, and before that it carried an unrelated blog whose pages have gone. Those old addresses are not restored and not rewritten: they either point to the closest page of this ledger or are withdrawn. Nothing on this site claims to continue that blog.
